Building an a-frame swing

Building-the-legs-

Building-the-legs-

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs for the a-frame swing. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to mark the cut lines at both ends of the 4×4 pieces of lumber and to get the job done with a circular saw.

Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth. You can adjust the angles if you want to enhance the lengths of the base.

Continue the woodworking project by building the sides of the garden swing. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the braces out of 4×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the pieces of lumber and make the angle cuts with a circular or a miter saw.

Drill pilot holes holes through the legs of the swing and insert 6″ screws into the braces. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components.

Continue the project by fitting the top component to the sides of the garden swing. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to lame sure the top component is perfectly horizontal using a spirit level.

Check if the corners are square before securing the top component to the sides by using 3 1/2″ galvanized screws. Drive the screws through the top of the legs into the horizontal component.

Building the fraces

Building the braces

In order to reinforce the structure of the a-frame swing, we recommend you to build support braces for the a-frame swing. Therefore, you have to make 45 degrees cuts to both ends of the braces.

Fit the braces into place and secure them to the frame tightly. It is essential to take accurate measurements before inserting the galvanized screws into place, otherwise the end result wont suit your needs.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the swing in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.

The 1×2 size for the leg bracing seems awfully small, is that the correct size

I think you have the wrong plan. There are no 1x2s used in this project.

My garden swing will be in full sun much of the time and I was wondering if I could build it to have some kind of covering? And possibly room for hanging plants or lights on a longer top bar? I have read many of the plans and I think the a frame seems to be the sturdiest option in case the kids get to swinging on it is this correct?

Yes, this is sturdy and ideal for swinging. You can build a roof to the top of the A-frame swing.
