Building a nightstand
Building the frame of the nightstand
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the nightstand, using the instructions described in the diagram. Therefore, we recommend you to build the components out of 3/4″ hardwood plywood. Mark the cut lines accurately.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the vertical components by inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.
Fitting the plywood back
Next, you have to attach a piece of 1/4′ plywood to the back of the nightstand. Cut the plywood at the right size and smooth the edges with sandpaper before securing it to the structure using finishing nails. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are perfectly right-angled.
Fitting the front trims
For a professional result, we recommend you to fit 1×2 trims to the front face of the nightstand. Cut the trims at the right size with a saw. Drill pocket holes at the top of the vertical trims and at both ends of the small horizontal components.
Secure the trims together by using 1 1/4″ screws and lock them to the nightstand with glue and finishing nails. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the nails. Smooth the exposed edges with sandpaper.
Fitting the caster wheels
In order to move the nightstand easily from one place to another, we recommend you to attach caster wheels to the four corners of the bottom slat. Align the caster wheels with attention and secure them into place with 1/2″ screws.
Attaching the top slats
In order to enhance the look of the simple nightstand, we recommend you to attach 1×4 slats to the top. Cut the slats at the right size and smooth the edges with a sander and fine-grit sandpaper. Center the slats to the nightstand and start installing them from the back to the front.
Leave no gaps between the slats and insert 1 1/” screws from the inside of the structure into the slats. In addition, you could secure the slats one to another by using pocket holes and screws.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the stand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the stand in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
