This step by step diy woodworking project about patio bench plans. This article features beautiful bench seat plans, as well as detailed instructions and diagrams. Always plan everything with good judgement, otherwise the end result might not raise up to your expectations.

Select the materials with great care, making sure the slats are in a good visual condition and perfectly straight. Cedar, pine or redwood are excellent choices, as they come with a beautiful finish and a great durability. Building a patio bench

Building-the-seat-supports

The first step of the project is to build the supports for the seat of the patio bench. A you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut out a curved piece of the supports. Mark the cut lines with a pencil and get the job done with a jigsaw.

Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues. Make two pieces of each kind, making sure you follow the patterns described in the plans.

Building-the-frame-of-the-bench

Building the frame of the patio bench is a straight-forward project, so make sure you take accurate measurements and align the components with great care. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the 4×4 legs with 2 1/2″ screws.

Top Tip: Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws into place and round the top of the legs.

Installing the bottom stretcher

Attach a 2×3 stretcher between the bottom supports of the bench, in order to enhance the rigidity of the frame. Align the components with great care and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Fitting the seat supports

Attach the rest of the supports to the to frame of the bench, making sure you place them equally-spaced. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square.

Attaching the slats

After building the structure of the patio bench, we recommend you to attach the seat slats into place. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to fit 1×4 and 1×3 slats to the supports.

Top Tip: Align the slats with great care, making sure you place them equally-spaced (place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats). Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ galvanized screws into the supports.

Patio bench plans

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bar from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the patio bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
