Simple Gazebo Railings Plans

This step by step diy woodworking project is about a gazebo railings plans. This article features detailed instructions for building 2×2 balusters for a garden gazebo. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. Building the cleats

Build the cleats for the railings from 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats, as shown in the plans.

Building the balusters

Build the balusters from 2×2 lumber. Use a miter saw to make 45 degrees to the top of the balusters. These cuts will add character to the gazebo project.

Front cleats

Fit the cleats to the front of the lean to gazebo. Use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the cleats to the posts. Make sure the corners are square and use a spirit level to check if the cleats are horizontal. Align the cleats to the back of the posts.

Fitting the side cleats

Fit the cleats to the sides of the gazebo, as shown in the plans. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure the cleats into place.

Fitting-the-balusters

Next, attach the balusters to the front face of the lean to gazebo. Drill pilot holes through the balusters and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the cleats. Place the balusters equally spaced for a professional result. The easiest way to get consistent gaps is to cut several pieces of wood to 3 1/4″.

Fitting the balusters to the sides

Attach the balusters to the sides of the gazebo. Place the balusters equally spaced. Cut a few pieces of wood to 3 3/4″ as spacers.

Then, you need to take care of the finishing touches. In addition, make sure you waterproof the joint between the roof and the wall of the existing building.

Lean to gazebo plans

Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
