Building a magazine rack
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides for the magazine rack. Therefore, use 1×6 slats in order to get a professional result. Mark the cut lines on the slats and get the job done using a jigsaw.
Make sure the blade of the saw goes exactly over the cut lines. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
The next step of the project is to lock the two sides together by fitting the bottom component. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom and to secure it to the sides with 1 1/4″ screws and glue.
Continue the project by fitting the 1×3 supports to the back of the wooden rack. Cut the slats at 22 1/2″ and drill pocket holes at both ends. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and add glue to the joints. Leave no gaps between the components and clamp the components together tightly.
Next, attach the 1×2 rails to the front of the magazine rack. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to place the rails equally spaced. Nail the rails to the sides and add glue for a better bond.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the rack from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the rack in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
