Farmhouse Nightstand Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step woodworking project is about farmhouse nightstand plans. This article features detailed instructions for building a simple wooden nightstand. We have designed the plans to keep the expenditures under control and to involve the least amount of work possible. These are the easiest farmhouse bedside table plans you will find on internet.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the table won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a farmhouse nightstand

Building the side panels

Building the side panels

The first step of the indoor woodworking project is to build the side panels. Use 1×4 lumber for the vertical slats and 1×2 lumber for the cleats. Use 1 1/4″ self tapping screws to secure the slats to the cleats (insert the screws though the cleats, two for each slat). Add glue to enhance the bond of the joints. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats.

Building the sides of the nightstand

Building the sides of the nightstand

Fit the panels to the 2×2 legs, as described in the diagram. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Insert 1 1/4″ screws through the cleats into the legs.

Fitting the bottom supports

Next, fit the bottom shelf supports to the sides of the nightstand. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 2×2 components and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue and check if the corners are square.

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

Continue the project by attaching the supports to the nightstand, as shown in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws.

Attaching the cleats

Next, fit the 1×2 cleats for the drawer. Secure the cleats to the side panels by using glue and screws.

Attaching the back panel

Attaching the back panel

Cut a piece of 1/4″ plywood and attach it to the back of the nightstand. Use brad nails and glue to secure the sheet into place.

Building the bottom shelf

Building the bottom shelf

Build the bottom shelf using 1×2 and 1×4 lumber. Drill the pilot holes and lock everything together with 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to create rigid joints. Smooth the surface with sandpaper.

Fit the shelf to the bottom supports, as shown in the diagram. Use a few finishing nails and glue to lock the shelf to the supports.

Building the tabletop

Next, you need to build the tabletop. Drill pocket holes as in the diagram and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock everything together tightly. Add glue to the joints and clamp everything tightly. Make sure the surface is even.

Attaching the top

Attaching the top

Center the nightstand frame to the wooden top, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the 2×2 supports and insert 2″ screws into the top. Add glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Building the drawer

Building the drawer

Use 3/4″ plywood for the drawer. Cut the components at the right dimensions and drill pocket holes at both ends of the sides. Add glue to the joints, align the edges with attention and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock everything together tightly. Leave no gaps between the components for a professional result.

Attaching the bottom of the drawer

Attaching the bottom of the drawer

Cut a piece of plywood for the bottom of the drawer. Drill pocket holes along the four edges and insert 1 1/4″ screws to attach it to the drawer frame. Wax the bottom of the drawer thoroughly, otherwise it won’t slide properly. Fit a button to the drawer and fit it to the nightstand.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden nightstand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.

Oh my gosh the cut list for this project is missing so many pieces, I have had to quit in the middle several times now to go and cut more pieces.

Sorry for that. Maybe you can help me with the missing info from the list. I’m looking forward to seeing your nightstand.

I am sorry, I must have missed the shelf support 2×2 when writing out the list but the cleats that the drawer slide on I don’t find anywhere

I’ve updated the list. 2 pieces of 1×2 lumber at 10 1/2″ were missing.
