Wood Bench Seat Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about wood bench seat plans. The project features instructions for building a bench seat without back support that is ideal for the 8′ long table. The bench seat has a rustic look with sharp lines. The best part of the project is that you can get the job done by yourself with common tools at a fraction of the cost of a similar retailed bench.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a bench seat

Building the legs

Building the legs

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the bench. Make 10 degree cuts to both ends of the 2×4 legs and smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Building the sides of the bench

Next, you need to fit the attach the braces and the supports to the legs. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the brace and secure it to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes through the top supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are perfectly aligned.

Fitting the stretchers

Fitting the stretchers

In order to reinforce the rigidity of the bench, you need to fit 2×4 supports to the bench. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the sides using 2 1/2″ screws, as shown in the diagram. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.

Building the seat

Building the seat

Build the seat for the wood bench using the information shown in the diagram. All the components, except the 2×6 middle slat, are made from 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the end boards. Use 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything together tightly. Place a piece of 1/2″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps.

Attaching the seat

Attaching the seat

Lay the seat to a level surface and center the frame, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the seat of the bench.

Fill the holes and dents with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Use 120-200 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden bench from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.

The plans mention a 2×6 board for the center of the bench, but no 2×6 boards are mentioned in the materials
