Home Bench Easy to Build Bench Plans

Easy to Build Bench Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about easy to build bench plans. This bench has been designed by Clint Norwood, who asked me to make the 3d plans and share it with you. Since I think this is a great design for a simple bench, here are the step by step plans. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a simple and cheap bench

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the bench. Cut all the components at the right dimensions from 2×4 lumber. In addition, drill the pocket holes, as in the plans and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the components together tightly. Make sure you place the pocket holes downward oriented, so you hide them. Add waterproof glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Attach the 2×4 slats to make the seat of the bench. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws so you lock the slats into place tightly.

Attach 1×4 trims to the bench. Align the edges flush and insert 1 5/8″screws, after drilling the pilot holes. Alternatively, you can use 1 1/2″ brad nails and glue.

My husband and I recently aquired a very large amount of recyclable palletts and reclaimed wood. Enough to make a catio, a sizable deck, plus many, many more projects. The simple bench is on the list! Can’t wait to get started.

You mention 2 1/2 screws and 2 1/2 pocket screws. How many do you need of each and what diameter? Is this sturdy enough to hold two adults?

20 pieces of each, #6 or #8 it doesn’t matter. Yes, it is very sturdy.
