Dog House Plans for Small Dogs

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about dog house shed for small dogs. I have designed this small dog house, so you can shelter your favorite pet in proper conditions. Use 2×2 lumber for the frame of the dog house so you can create a rigid and durable frame. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a small dog house

Floor-frame

Floor-frame

The first step of the project is to build the floor frame for the dog house. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber and lay them on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the floor

Fitting the floor

Fit a piece of 1/2″ plywood over the joists. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws into the joists.

Wall-frames

Wall-frames

Build the side wall frames from 2×2 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the studs. Align the edges with attention.

Assembling the dog house frame

Assembling the dog house frame

Fit the side walls to the floor of the dog house. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws though the bottom plates, so you can lock the walls into place tightly.

Fitting the side panels

Fit 1/2″ plywood or T1-11 siding to the sides of the dog house. Align the edges flush and insert 4d nails to lock them into place tightly.

Building-the-rafters

Build the rafters for the dog house from 2×2 lumber. Make birdsmouth cuts to the rafters, so they can fit to the top plates properly.

Fitting the trusses

Fitting the trusses

Fit the rafters to the top of the dog house. Lock the rafters together tightly using 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Front anc back panels

Front and back panels

Cut the front and back wall panels from T1-11 siding or 1/2″ plywood. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make a door opening. Drill a starting hole and then get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with 120-220 grit sandpaper.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint over the components to protect them from decay.

man these plans are pretty jacked up. in the instructions it says to make the side walls out of 2×4 but then when you get to that step they wont fit and it says to do 2×2. the shopping list doesnt reflect the actual materials at all. you flip flop between plywood and siding. really needs a good proofreading.

The materials list is still screwed up. 7 sheets of 3/4 ply? I don’t think so.
