How to build a vertical planter

Building the supports

Building the supports

The first step of the project is to build the vertical supports of the planter. Use 2×4 lumber, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a good condition.

Cutting the top of the supports

Cutting the top of the supports

Use a saw to make the cuts to the top of the vertical supports. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Attaching the back slats

Attaching the back slats

Lay 1×6 boards on a level surface and attach the legs into place. Mark the contour of the A-frame planter and make the cuts with a circular saw. Use brad nails and glue to lock the slats to the back of the vertical planter.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Next, you need to attach 1×1 cleats to the planter, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes and secure the cleats into place with 1 1/4″ screws and glue. Cut the cleats at 3 1/2″ lumber. Lean the cleats at 45 degrees. Taking into account this is a project with a rustic appearance, the joints don’t have to be perfect.

Building the shelves

Building the shelves

Build the planters out of 1×4 slats. Cut the components at the right size using a circular saw, by following the instructions described in the diagram.

Drill pilot holes through the boards and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the side cleats, to lock them into place.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden garden swing stand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.
