Building the basec
The first step of the project is to build the base for the kids desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to build the components out of 2×2 lumber. Cut the ends of the components in a decorative manner and smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Fit 1×2 pieces of lumber to the base components. Use finishing nails and waterproof glue to secure the components together.
Building the sides
The next step is to attach the legs to the base of the desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to cut the top of the legs at 5 degrees. Smooth the cut edges and remove the residues with a damp cloth. Drill pocket holes through the legs and secure them to the base using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints.
Building the frame of the desk
Continue the indoor project by making the components for the frame of the desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to use 3/4″ plywood for the components. Mark the cut lines on the pieces of plywood and get the job done with a proper circular saw.
Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues. Make the angle cuts with great care and attention.
Assembling the frame of the desk
Attach the components to the sides and lock them together using screws and glue. Make sure the corners are square and place a spirit level on the back component to make sure it is perfectly level.
Fitting the bottom slat
Fit a piece of 1×6 lumber to the base of the desk, as described in the diagram. The wooden slat will serve as foot rest. Secure the component to the frame using brad nails.
Fitting the bottom components
Build the bottom of the desk out of 3/4″ plywood. Cut the components at the right size, making sure you bevel the front edge at 85 degrees. Drill pocket holes along the edges and secure the panels to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws and glue.
Fitting the supports
Fit the supports to the back o the desk. Make sure the components overhang 1″ on both sides of the desk. Secure the supports to the desk using finishing nails and waterproof glue. Cut the back of the top support at 85 degrees and add glue to the joint.
Building the doors
Build the cover panels out of 3/4″ plywood. Attach 1×2 lumber to the covers using glue and brad nails. Leave no gaps between the components and smooth the exposed edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
Fitting the doors
Fit the doors to the structure and secure them into place using hinges. Leave 1/8″ between the doors and make sure they open and close easily.
How to build a kids desk
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the desk from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the play table in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
