Building a room divider

Building the frames

The first step is to build the frames for the main components. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×3 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and smooth the edges.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the vertical components using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Building the frame of the dividers

Next, make the 1×4″ x 1/4″ rabbets to the interior face of the dividers, as described in the diagram. Use a router to make the rabbets and remove the residues. It is essential to work with attention for a professional result.

Attaching the panels

Continue the project by fitting the panels to the frames. You can use 1/4″ plywood panels, glass or even mirrors. Adjust the size of the panels to the right dimensions and smooth the edges. Use silicone to secure the glass and mirror panels or finishing nails and glue for the plywood.

Room Divider Plans

Lock the dividers together using piano hinges. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the cabinet from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the room divider in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
