Bed Canopy Plans
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the canopy bed. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and the frame out of 1×8 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
Align the edges with great care and make sure the corners are right-angled. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between them. Plumb the legs with a spirit level before inserting the screws.
The next step of the indoor woodworking project is to attach the cleats to the interior faces of the bed frame. Cut the cleats at the right size and secure them to the side component using 2″ screws and glue. Make sure the cleats are perfectly horizontal before inserting the screws.
Continue the project by fitting the support slats to the cleats. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the slats out of 1×4 lumber. Place the slats equally-spaced and secure them to the cleats by using 1 1/4″ screws. Work with attention and make sure the joints are rigid.
Building the headboard for the bed frame is a straight-forward process. As you can see in the diagram, we recommend you to build it out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes along the sides and along the top edge.
In addition, fit a 2×2 component to the top of the headboard. Fit the panel into place and secure it thoroughly using 1 1/4″ screws and glue. Leave no gaps between the components.
In order to enhance the look of the twin canopy bed, we recommend you to fit a 1×2 trim to the headboard, as described in the diagram. Center the trim with attention and secure it to the headboard with waterproof glue and finishing nails.
In order to build the canopy, we recommend you to use 2×2 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and secure them to the legs, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the long components and secure them to the perpendicular components using 1 1/4′ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the stand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Secure the storage unit to the platform with nails and glue.
