Building a modern cabinet
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame for the wooden cabinet. You should use 1×14 slats or 3/4″ hardwood plywood. Cut 3/4″ out of the width of the shelves, before fitting them into place.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the vertical slats with 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.
Next, you have to fit the back of the cabinet, as it can be seen in the diagram. Cut the panel out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the four edges before fitting it to the frame. Use 1 1/4″ screws to create rigid joints between the components.
Top Tip: Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the components. The edges should be perfectly flush.
Next, you have to attach the top component to the cabinet. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to drill pocket holes along the top edge of the side components. Align the components with great care and lock them together with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.
In order to enhance the look of the cabinet, we recommend you to fit a 1×3 trim to the bottom of the cabinet. Make a curved cut to the trim, in order to enhance its appearance. Smooth the cut with sandpaper and secure it to the frame using finishing nails.
Building the doors for cabinet is a straight-forward task, but you need to take a few aspects into account before starting the actual assembly process. Build the frame of the doors out of 1×2 lumber and the panels out of 3/4″ plywood.
Assemble the frame of the doors using pocket holes and 1 1/4″ screws. Drill pocket holes along the edges of the panels, fit them to the frames and secure them into place with glue and screws.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the stand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Fit appropriate hinges and door handles to the cabinet.
