This step by step diy project is about office desk plans. If you want to build a desk with drawer that has a classic appearance, while keeping the costs under control, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the diagram. Adjust the size of the components with great care and lock them together by using waterproof glue and galvanized screws following the instructions.
It is essential to choose the right materials before starting the construction and the assembly of the diy desk with drawers. As you will see in the project, you need to choose durable lumber with a nice appearance, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Make sure the components are in a good visual condition and choose professional tools when adjusting their size. Take accurate measurements and join the components with glue and screws. Building a desk
The first step of the indoor woodworking project is to build the sides for the office desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the legs and the frame out of 2×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws.
Add glue to the joints. Drill pocket holes along the edges of the 3/4″ plywood panel and secure it to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws.
The next step of the project is to assemble the sides of the office desk together, by fitting the horizontal supports. Cut the components out of 2×2 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends of the components. Make sure the edges are flush and insert 2 1 /2″ screws and add glue.
Check if the corners are square before attaching the middle legs to the structure. Drill pocket holes at the top of the legs, align them properly and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.
Install the rest of the components to complete the frame of the office desk. Cut the components out of 2×2 lumber and secure them to the frame by using 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints. Remove the excess using a damp cloth.
In order to add a professional look to your office desk, we recommend you to fit 3/4″ plywood panels to the front face. Take accurate measurements and adjust the dimensions of the panels according to the diagrams.
Top Tip: Drill pocket holes along the edges. Fit the panels to the frame and secure them to the sides by using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to the joints.
Build the partition out of 3/4″ plywood, making sure you cut the component at the right dimensions. Mark the lines with a pencil and make sure the circular saw goes exactly over the cut lines.
Build the tabletop out of 3/4″ plywood or MDF, making sure the corners are square and that the dimensions match the ones in the diagram. Lay the tabletop on a level surface and center the frame of the desk. Drill pocket holes through the supports and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the tabletop.
Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Clamp the components with great care and let them for a few hours until it dries out completely.
Next, you have to fit the 1×2 supports that will hold the drawer slides locked into place. Make sure you install the supports also to the opposite side (to the partition) at the same height.
Continue the project by fitting the partitions between the drawers to the front face of the desk. Cut the components out of 2×2 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Align the components at both ends and secure them to the legs by inserting 2 1/2″ screws.
Build the small drawer using 1×3 lumber for the sides and 3/” plywood for the bottom. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and secure them to the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges with attention.
Drill pocket holes along the edges of the bottom and secure it to the frame by inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components for a professional result.
Build the big drawers out of 1×6 slats and 3/4″ plywood. Cut the components at the right size before assembling them together tightly. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side slats and along the edges of the bottom. Align the edges and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create rigid joints.
Fit the drawers into the opening and secure them to the side supports by using 3/8″ slides. Make sure the drawers are 3/4″ recessed from the face of the legs. Check if the drawers open and close properly before continuing the woodworking project with the rest of the steps.
In order to get a professional result, you have to fit the faces to the drawers, after installing them inside the opening. Therefore, cut the faces out of 3/4″ plywood and smooth the edges with fine grit sandpaper. Leave a gap of 1/8″ around the faces of the drawers and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws, from the inside towards outside.
Attach furniture handles to the drawers, after centering them to the faces with attention, as to get a professional appearance.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden desk in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
