This step by step diy woodworking project is about lean to ladder shelves plans. If you need more storage for your living room, this shelves unit is a worthy option. Building Ladder Shelves
Diagonal leg
The first step of the project is to build the legs for the ladder shelves. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to make a 10 degree cut to one end of the boards. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a vacuum cleaner.
Mark the cut lines to the opposite end of the boards. Get the job done with a circular saw.
Frame
The next step of the woodworking project is to Build the frame for the storage unit. Cut all pieces at the right dimensions, shown in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends horizontal boards and secure them to the uprights with 1 1/4″ screws. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.
Next, attach the lean to legs to the back frame. Align the edges and insert 1 1/4″ screws to assemble them together.
Shelf frames
Continue the project by making the boards for the shelf trays. Use 1×3 lumber and make decorative cuts to the top edge of the boards, as in the diagram.
Bottom shelves
Use 3/4″ plywood for the bottom panels of the trays. Use a circular saw to make the cuts to the plywood sheet,
Assembling the frame of the shelves
Next, we need to assemble the frame for the trays. Drill pocket holes at one end of the side boards. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to assemble all frames together.
Assembling the shelf
Drill pocket holes to the base panels for the trays, as shown in diagram. Align the frame to the bottom panels. Leave no gaps between the components and insert 1 1/4″ screws to assemble the trays together.
Shelves
Repeat the process for the rest of the trays.
Attaching the shelves
Attach the trays to the frame of the shelf unit. Use a spirit level to make sure the trays are perfectly horizontal. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the trays,

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the ladder shelves in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
