This step by step diy project is about toddler farmhouse bed plans. If you want to build a beautiful and stylish bed for your toddler with side guardrails, but keep all the costs under control you should pay attention to these instructions. This bed is designed for a standard crib mattress that has the following dimensions: 27 1/2″x52″. You can build this bed in just a few days with basic tools and materials.

It is essential to choose the right materials before starting the construction and the assembly of the bed. As you will see in the project, you need to choose durable lumber with a nice appearance, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Make sure the components are in a good visual condition and choose professional tools when adjusting their size. Take accurate measurements and join the components with glue and screws.

The first step of the project is to build the frame for the headboard. Therefore, just cut the 2x4s at the dimensions in the displayed in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.

Next, you have to attach the 2×4 boards to the frame. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the boards and attach them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Align the edges flush and use a piece of wood cut at 1 3/4″ as spacer.

In order to enhance the look of the farmhouse bed, we recommend fit a 2×4 trim to the top of the footboard. Drill pilot holes through the top trim and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the footboard.

Next, we need to frame the footboard. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and inert 2 1/2″ screws into the posts. Check if the corners are square.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the boards and secure them to the 2×4 legs by using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and and remove the excess by using a damp cloth. Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the components.

Attach a 2×4 trim to the top of the headboard in order to add character to your diy bed frame. Drill pilot holes through the trims and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the panel, making sure you leave no gaps between the components. Add glue to the joints and center the trim in a professional manner.

Next, you have to lock the headboard to the footboard by installing the side rails. Considering this is a toddler bed, 2×4 lumber is strong enough for the job.

Next, we need to assemble the guardrails to both sides of the bed frame. Therefore, cut the parts from 2×4 lumber as shown in the diagram. Drill pocket holes and assemble everything together with 2 1/2″ screws. You need to attach the guardrails to the headboard and to the side rails, using 2 1/2″ screws.

Remember than when you make the pocket holes, you need to drill them on the inside faces, so there are not visible from the outside of the bed.

Fit the 1×2 cleats to the bottom of the slats, on the interior faces, as seen in the diagram. Cut the cleats to the right size, drill pilot holes and secure it to the slats by using 1 5/8″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and use a spirit level to make sure the cleats are perfectly horizontal.

In order to get a professional manner, we recommend you to fit the support slats to the side cleats. Cut the slats out of 1×4 lumber and fit them to the cleats, making sure they are equally spaced.

Drill pilot holes through the slats, at both ends, and secure them to the cleats by using 1 5/8″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and all the edges are flush one with another, otherwise the end result might not suit your needs.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pocket holes with plugs and the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden bed in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
