DIY Project – 3 Cord Firewood Shed

From Pete,

Thank you for publishing the 3-cord woodshed plan.

We built this shed during the Covid era where wood prices were very high. We started looking at some alternatives and found some local wood mills that were much cheaper than the usual big stores. We got our wood milled for 2 sheds, cost for wood ending up at $750 Canadian. Of-course not pressure treated, but one benefit is that 2×4’s and 2×6’s are “real”. 2 inch is 2 inch. 6 inch is true 6 inch. The true sizes vs. the sizes used in the plan are a bit different, so keep that in mind when building

We wanted 2 sheds side-by-side. We deviated a bit from the original plan as our space would not allow for 2 x 12 feet. So we made them 11.4 feet. We also went a full foot higher as both my wife and I are tall and wanted to avoid bumping our heads going in.

Overall the plan is fantastic. I don’t exactly have 2 left feet, I would consider myself somewhat handy, however I had never built anything the size of these sheds. My wife on the other hand is not handy. After having built the first one with her help on some stuff, the second one – aside from levelling and building the floor base skeleton, she basically built one on her own.

Our climate is very windy and wet here and we wanted a metal roof, asphalt shingles fly all over the place here. Holy moly, we would have ended up with having to pay $600 Canadian for metal roofing for the 2 sheds. We ended up getting some used aluminum roofing for a total of $100 Canadian. Needed some silicone here and there to plug some holes, but it’s a woodshed, we don’t have to live in it.

Overall, as mentioned, the plans were superb, clear and we can’t wait to do other bigger projects now that we know we can build something like this.
