Side Nesting Box for a 4x4 Coop Plans

This step by step diy project is about 4×4 free chicken coop plans. This is PART 2 of the chicken coop project, where I show you how to build the side nesting boxes. This is a straight forward one day job that will make a huge difference on the long run. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a 4×4 backyard chicken coop

Use 2×2 lumber for the chicken coop floor frame. Cut the components at the dimensions shown in the diagram and lay them on a level surface. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to assemble everything together tightly. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.

Fit the floor frame to the side of the coop and align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to assemble everything tightly.

Attach a piece of 1/2″ plywood over the floor of the frame. Align the edges flush and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the floor to the frame.

Use 2×2 lumber for the nesting box frames. Cut the components as shown in the diagram and assemble everything with 2 1/2″ screws.

Fit the frames to the floor of the coop. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Fitting the side panels to the nesting box

Cut and fit the 1/2″ panels to the sides of the nesting box. Align the edges and insert screws to lock them into place tightly.

Cut and fit the 1/2″ plywood panel to the front of the chicken coop.

Fitting the partitions to the nesting boxes

Fit the 1/2″ plywood partitions to the interior of the nesting box. Align the edges and insert 1 5/8″ screws to secure the panels into place tightly.

Fit the 1×2 slat to the top of the nesting box. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock it to the framing.

Use 1/2″ plywood for the lid of the nesting box. Fit the lid into place and use a piano hinge to secure it to the 1×2 slat.

Fit the tar paper and the asphalt shingles to the lid and then attach the handle.

4×4 Chicken coop plans

This 4×4 chicken coop is easy to build and extremely durable. This coop is the perfect candidate if you want to go further and add insulation between the studs. I have tons of other chicken coop designs, so make sure you look over them to get some more building inspiration.
