This step by step woodworking project is about 4×8 coal bunker plans. This is PART 2 of the coal bunker project, where I show you how to build the lid and the front door. This is an easy weekend project that will add value to your backyard. You can easily adjust the size of the bunker to suit your needs. Take a look over my woodworking plan list HERE.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the bench won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a wood coal bunker
The first step of the project is to build the lid for the coal bunker. Lay the 1×4 slats on a level surface and then attach the 1×4 supports. Place the supports equally spaced and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock the lid together tightly. Drill pilot holes through the supports so you prevent the wood from splitting.
Fit the lid to the top of the coal bunker and secure it to the top with hinges. Make sure the lid open and closes easily, before going to the next step of the project.
Use 1×4 lumber and 2×2 lumber for the front door rails. Assemble the rails and then lock them to the front of the coal bunker.
Use 1×4 lumber for the front door. Cut the slats at the right dimensions and then lock them together, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock everything together tightly.
Fit the door to the front of the coal bunker. Install a handle so you can slide it up, whenever you want to take some coal from the bunker.
Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components, so you can enhance the look of the bunker and to protect the components from decay.
Make sure you take a look over PART 1 of the project, so you learn how to build the frame for the bunker.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden bench from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.
