This step by step diy project is about portable vegetable trellis plans. I have designed this angled trellis so you can help your climbing vegetables develop properly and add unique appeal to your garden in the same time. If you know the basic woodworking skills and have some basic household tools, you can get the job done for this angled wood trellis in a few hours. Invest in cedar or other weather resistant lumber for a professional result. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building an angled vegetable trellis

Building the front legs

Building the front legs

The first step of the project is to build the front legs. Cut one end of the legs at 60 degrees and the other leg at 30 degrees. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a professional result. In addition, cut the support for the trellis from 1×2 lumber, as shown in the plans.

Assembling the front legs

Assembling the front legs

Fit the supports to the front legs, making sure you leave 3/4″ from the edges. Use 2″ brad nails and waterproof glue to secure the supports to the legs. Make sure you leave no gaps between the components for a professional result.

Assembling the sides for the trellis

Assembling the sides for the trellis

Next, you need to assemble the sides for the vegetable trellis by fitting the front legs to the back legs. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure the front legs to the back legs. Add waterproof glue to the joints for a durable and stronger joint.

Assembling the trellis frame

The next step of the garden woodworking project is to fit the supports to the frame. Cut one end of the side braces at 60 degrees using a good saw. Drill pocket holes at both ends of all the supports, align the into place with attention and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place. Add glue to the joints.

Building the shelf slats

Building the shelf slats

Build a shelf for the vegetable trellis from 1×8 lumber. Make notches to one of the slats, so it can fit around the back legs. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a professional result.

Fitting the shelf

Fit the slats to the bottom of the frame and secure them into place with 2″ brad nails or with 1 1/4″ screws.

Fitting the trellis

Fitting the trellis

One of the last steps of the project is to fit the 1×2 trellis to the front of the frame. As you can imagine, you can adjust the distance between the trellis to suit your needs. Make sure you align the slats at both ends and secure them to the cleats with 2″ brad nails. Cut a wood block to use it as space, if you want to create even gaps between the trellis.

Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. I would recommend you not to apply stain or other wood preservatives on the surfaces that will get in contact with the plants. If you use weather resistant lumber your vegetable trellis will be protected from the elements.
