Building the frame

Building the frame

The first step of the backyard project is to build the A-frames. As you can see in the plan,s you need to build the components from 2×2 lumber. Mark the cut lines at 15 degrees and make the cuts with a proper miter saw.

It is essential to make all the components for the A-frames in the same manner, otherwise the top ridge might not fit properly into place. Make the component 1-2 longer, if you want to set the into the ground.

Fitting the top beam

Fitting the top beam

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the top ridge into place. As it can be seen in the image, we recommend you to fit the component between the A-frames and to lock it with galvanized screws.

Place a spirit level on top of the beam to check if it is horizontal. We strongly recommend you to place the A-frames equally spaced, if you want to get a professional result.

Attaching the braces

Installing the support

If you want to reinforce the tomato trellis. you have to install 1×2 braces, as in the plans. Cut both ends of the braces at 15 degrees, in order to fit into place properly. Drill pilot holes through the braces and lock them to the posts with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws.

Moreover, add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to enhance the bond of the components. Align everything and check if the A-frames are perfectly plumb.

Installing the support

The next step of the project is to install the support on top of the bottom braces. Therefore, drill pilot holes through the 2×2 component and insert screws into the braces. Make sure the support is centered to the braces, before driving the screws in.

Attaching the twine

One of the last steps of the project is to tie several pieces of string to the top beam. As you can notice in the image, we recommend you tie the twines equally spaced, according to the tomatoes you are going to plant in the backyard.

Last but not least, you have to finish touches. Insert all the screws at the same level with the wooden surface and smooth the sharp edges with a sand-block. Apply several coats of paint to the components, to prevent them from decay or weather damage.

Top Tip: Smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper along the wood grain and clean the residues. Afterwards, apply a few coats of paint or stain to the structure.
