This step by step diy woodworking project is about window box plans. Building a window box

Building the bottom component

The first step of the woodworking project is about building the bottom component of the window box. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the front edge of the 4 1/2″ wide slat at 72.5 degrees. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to use a circular saw.

Take accurate measurements and get the job done in a professional manner. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues.

Building the sides

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the sides of the window box. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on a piece of 1×6 lumber.

Top Tip: Get the job done with a circular saw and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Attach the sides on the bottom component and secure them into place with waterproof glue and with several 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

Fitting the back slat

Attach a 1×6 slat to the back of the window box and secure it tightly into place with finishing nails. Make sure you leave no gaps between the components and add waterproof glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Attaching the front face

Similarly, we recommend you to attach a piece of 1×6 lumber to the front face of the wooden box. Cut the slat at the right size, align it at both ends and secure it into place with finishing nails. Work with attention and add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to get a professional result.

Make sure the top edge of the front slat is flush with the side components, before inserting the 1 1/4″ finishing nails. Don’t forget to drill several drainage holes through the bottom of the window box.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bar from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the window box in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
