Building a planter

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the deck rail planter. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to attach the side components to the bottom slat. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws / nails.

Make sure you drill several drainage holes through the bottom slat. Drill pocket holes through the side components and secure them to the bottom of the planter. Add glue to create a rigid structure.

Fitting the ends

Fitting the ends

Continue the project by fitting the end components to the planter. Cut the components out of 1×8 lumber and fit them into place. Drill pilot holes through the side components and insert the screws into the end components. Make sure you leave no gaps between the components.

Top Tip: Smooth the exposed edges of the trims in order to add character to the planter. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the joints are rigid.

Attaching the trims

Attaching the trims

In order to enhance the look of the deck rail planter, we recommend you to attach 1×2 trims to the bottom and to the top of the components. Cut both ends of the 1×2 trims at 45 degrees.

Top Tip: Align the components with great care and lock them to the planter with finishing nails. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the planter. Leave the glue to dry out for several hours.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bar from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
