This step by step diy woodworking project is about folding chalkboard easel plans. If you want to build a simple easel with chalkboard panels on both sides, you should take a look over the instructions described in the article.  Work with good judgement and don’t forget to take a look over the rest of the related plans, as there are many designs and woodworking projects to select from.

Invest in high quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar. Drill pocket holes before inserting the galvanized screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. Building a folding easel
Building the frames
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame for the chalkboard easel. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the vertical components out of 1×2 lumber and the horizontal components out of 1×3 lumber.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and make sure the edges are flush, before inserting 1 1/4″ screws into the sides. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.
Attaching the chalkboard panel
The next step of the project is to attach the 1/4″ plywood panels to the back of the frames. Cut the plywood at the right size and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Use waterproof glue and 3/4″ screws or nails to lock the components together tightly.
Apply several layers of chalkboard paint over the plywood panel, until the whole surface is covered evenly. Remember that you don’t have to apply paint to the back of the panel.
Attaching the shelf
Continue the woodworking project by attaching 1×2 shelves to the easel, as described in the diagram. Make sure you round the exposed corners and smooth the curved cuts with sandpaper. Drill pocket holes along the long edge and secure the component to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws and waterproof glue.
Assembling the easel
After building the two sides of the chalkboard, we recommend you to lock them together tightly by fitting hinges to the top of the easel. Make sure you align the components with great care and leave no gaps between them. Afterwards, drill pilot holes at the bottom of the vertical supports and fit rope, to prevent the easel from opening more than needed.
Folding chalkboard easel plans
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the easel from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the folding chalkboard in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
