This step by step diy woodworking project is about dog bed plans. If you want to learn how to build a dog bed, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. In addition, don’t forget to pay attention to the rest of the related projects, as there might be other woodworking plans for your needs, such as a dog house, a dog crate or a nice dog kennel.

Before starting the actual construction of the dog bed, we recommend you to plan everything with great care. Work with attention and invest in high-quality materials, that are weather-resistant and highly durable. Cedar, pine or redwood are excellent choices, as they are both durable and have a nice appearance. Align the components at both ends before drilling pilot holes and inserting the screws. Building a dog bed

Buildling the face of the dog bed

Building the face of the dog bed

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the dog bed. Therefore, build the front face of the frame out of 1×10 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the slat with a pencil and adjust its size and the shape with a circular saw or jigsaw.

After making the front face, we recommend you to smooth the edges with a piece of sandpaper. Drill pilot holes through the components and insert screws to lock them tightly.

Building the side walls

Building the back wall of the frame requires the same techniques described above, so just make sure the measurements are accurate, before using the circular saw. If the component doesn’t have the right size, it will not fit into place.

The next step of the project is to build the sides of the dog bed frame, using the information shown in the plans. As you can notice, anyone with basic woodworking skills can get the job done, as it doesn’t require complex skills or power tools.

Top Tip: You could adjust the design and the pattern of the components, as to suit your needs and to match the style of the rest of the backyard projects.

Installing the cleats

Installing the cleats

Next, we recommend you to attach 1×1 cleats to the inside of the frame. Use a spirit level to check if the cleats are horizontal, before drilling pilot holes through the cleats and inserting screws into the frame.

Fitting the floor

Fitting the floor

Attaching the floor of the dog bed is a straight forward project, as it doesn’t require complex skills nor expensive materials. Cut the piece of 3/4″ plywood at the right size and fit it inside the frame, as shown in the plans.

Top Tip: Make sure the corners of the frame are right-angled, otherwise the piece of plywood won’t slide in properly. Don’t insert finishing nails into the cleats.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the dog bed frame in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
