How to build a garden wagon
The first step of the project is to build the frame for the garden wagon. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to use 1×4 slats for the components. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 10 1/2″ long components. Insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components and add glue to the joints. Align the edges before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.
Use a piece of 3/4″ plywood to build the floor of the wagon. Use a circular saw to cut the panel at the right dimensions and align the edges with great care. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock the panel to the frame.
Build the exterior supports out of 2×2 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the supports and make the notches using a circular saw. Use a chisel to clean the notches and smooth the surface with fine-grit sandpaper.
Attach the supports to the exterior of the frame, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the bottom of the supports and insert 2″ screws into the frame of the wagon. Plumb the supports with a spirit level, before inserting the screws.
Build the exterior walls for the garden wagon out of 1×8 lumber. Cut the slats at the right size and fit them to the structure, as described in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the components and lock them to the supports by inserting 1 1/4″ screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.
Build the corner reinforcements out of 1×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes along the edges and secure them to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components.
Fit caster wheels to the supports. Use screws to lock the rubber caster wheels into place. Use fixed caster wheels for the back of the wagon.
Build the handle out of 1×2 lumber. Cut out a 3/4″ hole in the vertical support and fit a 1×1 round handle, as show in the diagram. Use glue and finishing nails to lock the handle into place.
Use corner brackets to lock the handle into place. Drill a pilot hole through the handle and use a 2″ carriage bolt to let it slide easily.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden garden wagon from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.
