This step by step diy project is about drop down desk plans. If you want to build a desk for your bedroom but the space is an issue, we recommend you to check out the instructions described in the article. Adjust the size of the component and the design of the desk with great care and lock them together by using waterproof glue and galvanized screws following the instructions.
It is essential to choose the right materials before starting the construction and the assembly of the drop down desk. As you will see in the project, you need to choose durable lumber with a nice appearance, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Make sure the components are in a good visual condition and choose professional tools when adjusting their size. Take accurate measurements and join the components with glue and screws. Building a drop down desk
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame for the drop down desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 3/4″ plywood.
Take accurate measurements and use a circular saw to get the job done in a professional manner. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the vertical ones using 1 1/4″ screws and glue. Make sure the corners are square.
The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the back to the frame of the desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the back out of 3/4″ plywood, cutting the component at the right dimensions using a circular saw.
Drill pocket holes along the edges of the plywood sheet and fit it inside the frame. Make sure the edges are flush and use 1 1/4″ screws to lock the components together tightly. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.
The next step of the project is to fit the shelves to the desk structure. As you can notice in the diagram, you have to build the shelves out of 3/4″ plywood and to cut them at the right size. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the shelves and secure them to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws and waterproof glue.
After building the structure of the desk, we recommend you to attach the drop down component. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to take accurate measurements and cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
Use a continuous hinge to secure the component to the frame, as described in the diagram. In addition, fit latches on both side of the desk to secure the cap into place tightly.
In order to get a professional result, we recommend you fit the legs for the front down desk to the face component. Build the components out of 1×3 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical supports. Insert 1 1/4″ screws though the supports into the top and bottom components, making sure the corners are square.
Center the legs to the face of the desk and secure it into place using concealed hinges. Leave no gaps between the legs and the drop down component.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Leave 36 3/4″ from the floor to the bottom of the desk and insert 3 1/2″ through the back into the studs.
