This step by step diy project is about picture frame plans. If you want to build a beautiful wooden frame for your pictures, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Adjust the size of the components with great care and lock them together by using waterproof glue and galvanized screws following the instructions. Make sure you compute the most appropriate dimensions for your project.

Building a picture frame

Building the bottom of the frame

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the bottom of the picture frame. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×3 lumber and 1×2 lumber. Cut the components at the right dimensions and smooth the cut edges.

Drill pocket holes along the top edge of the 1×3 slat and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the 1×2 trim. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the bonds.

Fitting the vertical components

Continue the project by attaching the sides to the bottom components. Cut the sides out of 1×3 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Make sure the edges are flush and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create rigid joints. Add glue to the structure to make sure the frame is rigidly locked together.

Fitting the top component

Next fit the top component made out of 1×3 lumber. Cut the component at the right size and smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Drill pocket holes along the top edge of the component, on the back side. Insert 1 1/4″ screws through the vertical supports into the top component to create rigid joints.

Fitting the top trim

If you really want to make your picture frame stand out, we recommend you to attach a 1×2 trim to the top, as described in the diagram. Make sure the edges are flush and leave no gaps between the components before inserting the galvanized screws. Add glue to the joint and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Making the rabbets

Before attaching the picture to the wooden frame, we recommend you to make 1/4″ x 1/4″ rabbets to the back of the structure, as described in the diagram. Use a router to get the job done in a professional manner. It is essential to plan everything from the beginning, otherwise the frame might be too large or too small for the picture.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden frame in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
