Building a desk

Building the front face

Building the front face

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the front panel for the desk. Therefore, we recommend you to build the panel out of 3/4″ plywood, the top trims out of 1×3 lumber and the vertical trims out of 1×2 lumber.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical trims and secure them to the horizontal cleats by using 1 1/4′ screws. Drill pilot holes through the trims and secure them to the panels by using finishing nails and waterproof glue.

Building the side faces

Building the side faces

The next step of the woodworking project is to build the side panels. Therefore, use the same techniques described above to assemble the sides. Take accurate measurements and assemble the components tightly.

Assembling the desk

Assembling the desk

Assembling the frame of the desk is one of the main steps of the project. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal cleats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the 2×2 legs. Make sure the edges are flush one with another and check if the corners are square.

Add waterproof glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Leave no gaps between the components and double check if the whole structure is rigid and durable.

Fitting the support

Fitting the support

In order to add strength to the desk structure, we recommend you to fit a 2×2 support to the top of the frame. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the support and secure it to the sides using 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the components.

Attaching the tabletop

Attaching the tabletop

Build the tabletop out of MDF or 3/4″ plywood. Lay the component on a level surface center the structure to it.

Top Tip: Pay attention to this step, otherwise the end result won’t suit your needs and level of expectations. Drill pilot holes through the horizontal cleats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the tabletop. In addition, add glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints. Leave the glue to dry out for a few hours.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden desk in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
