Bed Headboard Plans
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the panel for the headboard. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to mark the cut lines to the 1×6 slats and get the job done with a professional saw.
Lay the slats on a level surface and leave no gaps between them. Drill pilot holes through the cleats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the vertical slats. Make sure the corners are square.
Continue the woodworking project by attaching the legs to the headboard panel. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to cut the legs out of 4×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the lumber and adjust their size using a circular saw.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats and secure them to the legs by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws.
Next, fit the 2×4 trim to the top of the headboard. Smooth the cut edges before fitting it into place. Make sure the edges are flush before securing the trim into place, by using galvanized screws. Add glue to the joints and continue the project by fitting the top trim.
In order to add character to your project, we recommend you to fit a 2×6 trim to the top of the headboard. Center the top trim to the structure and drill several pilot holes holes. Insert 2 1/2″ screws through the trim into the headboard and add glue to enhance the bond of the joint.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden bed in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
