Align the wooden components at both hand before driving in the screws. Don’t forget to pre-drill holes in the components, as to prevent the wood from splitting. Moreover, don’t forget to countersink the head of the screws, before inserting the wooden screws. Building a simple bookcase
Building the back of the bookcase
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the back of the wooden bookcase. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the posts out of 2×2 lumber and the panel out of 3/4″ plywood.
Drill pocket holes along the side and top edges of the panel and fit it between the side components. Add glue to the joints, make sure the edges are flush and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame.
Building the frame of the bookcase
The next step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the simple bookcase. Cut the components out of 2×2 lumber, after taking accurate measurements. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components.
Plumb the front legs, check if the corners are square and insert 2 1/2″ screws through the horizontal supports into the vertical legs. Add glue to the joints to create rigid joints.
Fit the shelves into place
Cut the shelves out of 3/4″ plywood and smooth the edges after getting the job done with a circular saw. Vacuum the residues before fitting it into place. Drill pocket holes along the edges of the shelves and fit them between the frames.
Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Make sure the edges are flush and insert 1 1/4″ screws through the shelves into the frame.
Attaching the top to the bookcase
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to attach the top component over the structure of the bookcase. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to glue together 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood.
Attach the component to the top of the bookcase, drill pocket holes through the top of the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, you need to fill the cracks with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Afterwards, sand the wooden surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues thoroughly.
Top Tip: Protect the wooden components from wood decay by applying several coats of stain or paint.
