4×8 Backyard Chicken Coop Nesting Box Plans

This step by step diy project is about 4×8 backyard chicken coop plans. This is PART 2 of the backyard chicken coop project, where I show you how to complete it by attaching the nesting boxes and the doors. This is a simple project so you shouldn’t have a lot of trouble getting the job done. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a 4×8 backyard chicken coop nesting box

Fitting the nesting box supports

The first step of the project is to build the supports for the nesting boxes. Drill pocket holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure the supports to the frame of the chicken coop. Make sure the corners are square.

Bottom of the nesting box

Use 3/4″ plywood for the floor of the nesting box. Make the cuts with a circular saw.

Sides-for-nesting-box

Cut the sides and the partitions for the nesting boxes. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheet and get the job done with a circular saw.

Assembling the nesting box of the coop

Drill pilot holes through the bottom of the partitions and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock them to the floor. Drill pilot holes through the sides and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the floor.

Fit the back sheet to the nesting box. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws.

Attach the nesting box to the back of the chicken coop, on top of the supports. Align the edges, drill pilot holes and insert screws to secure the box into place tightly.

Fitting the lid to the nesting box

Use 3/4″ plywood for the lid of the nesting box. Use hinges to secure the lid to the wall of the chicken coop.

Fit asphalt shingles to the top of the lid.

Fitting the window trims

Fit the 1×3 trims around the windows. You can use plexiglass for the windows and secure them to the wall frame with a few screws.

Building the doors

Chicken coop jambs

Use 1×3 lumber for the chicken door jambs. Align the edges flush and secure them into place with 1 1/4″ nails and glue.

Use the chicken door from 1×3 and 3/4″ plywood. Align the edges flush and insert 1 1/4″ nails to secure everything together tightly. Add glue to the joints.

Fitting the chicken door

Fit the chicken coop to the opening and then secure it into place with hinges. Add a latch so you can keep the locked and avoid the predators.

Building the front door

Build the front door for the chicken coop from 3/4″ plywood and 1×3 trims. This large door will help you have access inside the coop and clean it regularly.

Large door jambs

Fit the 1×3 jambs around the front opening. Use 1 1/4″ nails to secure the trims into place tightly.

Fit the door to the opening and align everything with attention. Use hinges to secure the door to the jambs. Install a latch so you can keep the door locked.

This 4×8 chicken coop is easy to build and extremely durable. The coop comes with a large front door so you can clean the inside, a small back door so the chickens can get out and a two windows, for lots of light. Apply a few coats of paint over the components so you can enhance the look of the project and to protect the components from decay.
