This step by step diy project is about garden hod plans. I have designed this garden hod so you can harvest vegetables from your garden. In addition, you can also use this hod as a magazine rack and it will make an awesome gift for a friend. You can easily adjust the size of the hod to suit your needs. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

Building a garden hod

Building the faces

Building the faces

The first step of the project is to build the faces for the garden hod. Mark the cut lines on the 1×12 slats and get the job done with a jaw. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges thoroughly.

Fitting the slats to the sides

Fitting the slats to the sides

Next, you should attach the 1×2 strips of wood (1/4″ thick) to the sides of the garden hod. Align the edges so they are flush with the faces and place 1/4″ pieces of plywood to get even gaps. Use 3/4″ brad nails to secure the slats into place and add glue to the joints.

Fitting the slats to the bottom

Fitting the slats to the bottom

Attach the 1×2 strips to the bottom of the garden hod, as well. Secure the slats into place with glue and brad nails.

Get the job done by attaching the 1×2 strips to the rest of the hod, as shown in the diagram. Align the edges with attention and smooth the edges properly.

Fitting the handle

Fitting the handle

Use a 3/4″ dowel for the handle.  You have two alternatives for setting the handles into place. On one hand, you can set the handle between the faces and insert a few 1 1/4″ brad nails. On the other hand you can drill pilot holes through the faces and insert the handle. Afterwards, drill a pilot holes and insert a nails through the top of the faces into the handle.

Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth everything with 120-220 grit sandpaper to get an even surface. If you use weather resistant lumber, such as cedar or redwood you don’t have to apply any products to seal the basket hod. If you use pine, you could try to apply a few coats of lacquer.
