This step by step diy woodworking project is about wooden spice rack plans. This article features detailed instructions for building a 16″ wide wall mounted spice rack. However, you can adjust the size of the rack to suit your needs. You can complete this project in just a few hours with basic tools. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building the sides

Building the sides

Build the sides of the spice rack from 1×6 lumber. Mark the cut lines to the side slats and get the job done with a circular saw for the straight lines and a jigsaw for the curved ones. Smooth the edges thoroughly with 80-120 sandpaper.

Attaching the back slats

Attaching the back slats

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the vertical components with 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to the joints. Make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Fit the shelves to the spice rack and insert 2″ brad nails through the sides, to lock them into place tightly. Make sure the corners are right-angled.

Fitting the front trims

Fitting the front trims

Attach the 1×2 trims to the front of the spice rack. Align the trims with attention and lock them into place with brad nails. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are aligned.

Fitting the dowel hanger

Fitting the dowel hanger

Fit the 1/2″ dowel to the bottom of the spice rack, as shown in the diagram. Insert 1 1/4″ brad nails through the sides into the dowel. Alternatively, you can make 1 1/4″ holes into the sides and fit the dowel (add 1/2″ to it) before assembling the rack.

Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Top Tip: Apply a few coats of paint or stain to the components, to enhance the look of the project.
