Building a lap desk
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the lap desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to use 1×3 lumber for the components.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components. Add glue to the joints after making sure the corners are square and the edges perfectly flush.
Continue the woodworking project by attaching the 1×3 slats to the frame of the desk. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and fit them inside the frame, Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to the joints. Make sure the edges are flush and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame.
In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to attach 1×3 legs to the frame of the lap desk. Drill pilot holes along the bottom edges of the legs and insert 1 1/4′ screws into the frame of the desk. Add glue to the joints.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden desk in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
