Building the sides of the dollhouse

Building the sides of the dollhouse

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the dollhouse. As you can easily notice in the image, we recommend you to build the sides by using 1×12 slats. Mark the cut lines before adjusting the size of the slats with a circular saw.

Drill starting holes before making the notches with a jigsaw. Remove the excess with a sand-block and continue the project by making the opposite wall. Cut the top at about 30 degrees.

Fitting the base

Fitting the base

The next step of the project is to attach the base to the sides walls. As it can be seen in the image, we recommend you to cut the piece of 1×12 lumber at the right size and to drill pocket holes at both ends.

Align the component at both ends, add waterproof glue and insert several screws to the job done in a professional manner. Leave about 3/4″ from the bottom to the base, if you want to add a nice trim to the dollhouse.

Installing the back pannel

Installing the back panel

Continue the project by attaching the back to the dollhouse. As you can notice in the image, it would be a great idea to cut the piece of 1/4″ plywood at the right size with a circular saw and to lock it into place with finishing nails.

Align the panel at both ends and make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the nails. Add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Fitting the interior shelves

Fitting the interior shelves

If you want to enhance the look of the simple dollhouse, we recommend you to add interior shelves to the structure. Cut the 1×12 slats at the right size and lock them to the side walls with 1 1/4″ screws, after drilling pocket holes at both ends.

Place a spirit level on top of the shelves to check if they are perfectly horizontal. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the partitions and lock them between the shelves with pocket screws.

Attaching the bottom trims

Attaching the bottom trims

If you want to enhance the look of the dollhouse, we recommend you to attach 1×2 trims to the bottom of the structure. As you can easily notice in the image, we recommend you to cut the ends of the trims at 45 degrees, as to get proper joints.

Attaching the front wall

Attaching the front wall

Although this step is not compulsory, it will most certainly add value to your project and enhance the look of the dollhouse. Cut a piece of 1×12 lumber at the right size and make a few notches as shown in the free plans.

Drill a starting holes and cut out the squares, if you want to get the job done in a professional manner. Smooth the cut edges with a piece of sandpaper, if you want to get a professional result.

Attaching the trims

Attaching the trims

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the 1×1 (1/4″ thick) trims around the windows. Although you can get the job done also by painting the areas around the notches, fitting the trims into place will make a significant difference.

After cutting the trims to the right size, we recommend you to attach them into place by using waterproof glue. In addition, you can also insert several 3/4″ finishing nails to lock everything tightly.

Attaching the roof

Attaching the roof

Attaching the roof to the top of the dollhouse is not a complex job, as it requires basic woodworking skills. If you want to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the piece of 1×16 lumber at the right size and to lock it into place with finishing nails.

Add waterproof glue to joints, if you want to enhance the rigidity of the structure. Make sure there are no gaps between the components, if you aim for a professional result.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wood table in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
