Building a bedside table

Building the sides of the nightstand

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the bedside table. As you can see in the diagram, use 2×2 lumber for the legs and 3/4″ plywood for the panels. Drill pocket holes along the sides of the panels and secure them to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws.

Make sure the edges are flush and add glue to the joints. Leave no gaps between the components and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the back to the nightstand

Continue the project by fitting the back to the structure. Cut the panel out of 3/4″ plywood, after taking accurate measurements, using a circular saw. Drill pocket holes along the sides and secure the panel to the sides, as described in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to the joints.

Fitting the rafters

Next, we recommend you to fit the shelves to the bedside table. Cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: Drill pocket holes along the side and back edges, before securing the shelves to the structure using 1 1/4′ screws. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

Attaching the top of the bedside table

Build the top of the table out of 3/4″ plywood at the right dimensions. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper and lay it on a level surface.

Top Tip: Center the structure of the table to the top and insert 1 1/4″ screws through the pocket holes drill in the legs. Add glue to the joints and make sure there are no gaps between the components.

Building the frame of the door

Build the frame of the doors out pf 1×3 lumber. Cut the slats at the right size and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the vertical components using 1 1/4″ screws.

Make sure the corners are square and add glue. Use a router to make 1/4″x1/4″ rabbets on the interior face of the frame, as in the diagram.

Attaching the mirror

Fit the glass or the mirror to the frame of the door. Use a silicone bead to lock the piece of glass into place. Make sure the components are locked together properly, before fitting the door to the frame of the bedside table.

Fit the door into place

Fit the door to the opening and secure it to the frame using appropriate hinges. Leave 1/8″ around the door and maker sure it opens and closes properly. Fit a handle to the door, making sure the design matches the style of the rest of the furniture.

Bedside table plans

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the stand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the stand in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
