This step by step diy woodworking project is about 2×4 sandbox plans. I have designed this super simple 4’x4′ sandbox with backrest, so you can build one from just 2x4s. This is a super simple build that anyone can make in one weekend. You can make adjustments to the plans to suit your needs. See my other woodworking plans HERE. See all my 2×4 woodworking plans, as well.
There are many plans and designs to choose from, so make sure you take a close look over the rest of the garden bridge plans featured on our website. Plan everything with attention and adjust the size and the shape of the bridge to suit your needs. Plumb the legs and make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the galvanized screws into place. Drill pilot or pocket holes to prevent the wood from splitting. Sandbox – Free DIY Plans
The first step of the project is to build the sides for the sandbox. Therefore, use a miter saw to make the 10 degree cuts at both ends of the 2×4 slats. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Â
Use 2×4 lumber for the corner supports. Use a saw to make the angle cuts to both ends of the supports and then smooth the cuts with sandpaper.
Fit the supports to the corners of the sandbox, as shown in the diagram. Align the edges with attention and clamp the supports to the frames. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly.
Fit the 2×4 slats to the sandbox, to create the seat. Place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps. Align the edges at both ends. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure them into place tightly.
Fit the 2×4 supports to the back of sandbox. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the supports into place tightly.
Fit the 2×4 slats to the backrest supports. Center the slats into place and then lock them with 2 1/2″ screws.
Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to protect them from the elements. Staple landscape fabric to the interior faces of the sandbox. Afterwards, fill the sandbox with fine sand.
You can customize the potting bench to suit your needs, by adding a few shelves. This is a quick one day project that you can build using just 2x4s.
