2×4 Planter Box Plans

Assembling-the-wide-panels

Assembling-the-wide-panels

The first step of the project is to build the wide panels for the 2×4 planter box. Therefore, cut all the components at the right dimensions, as shown in the diagram. Lay the horizontal cleats on a level surface and then attach the vertical slats. Align the slats at both ends so that the cleats overhang the panel 1 1/2″ on both sides. Drill pilot holes through the slats and then insert 2 1/2″ screws into the cleats. Leave no gaps between the slats.

Assemble the other 2 panels for the planter box. Use the same techniques described above to assemble the panels.

The next step of the project is to assemble the 4 sides together tightly. Make sure the edges are flush and check if the corners are right angled. Drill pilot holes through the blue panels and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular panels.

Fitting the bottom cleats

Fit the 2×4 cleats to the interior of the planter box. Cut the cleats at 14″ and then secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Align the edges with attention.

Use 2×4 lumber for the top trims. Use a miter saw to make 45 degree cuts to both ends of the trims. Align the trims into place and then secure them into place with 2 1/2″ nails.

The next step of the project is to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance look of the planter box.
