Building picture ledges
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the bottom for the ledges. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to drill pocket holes along the sides of the 1×4 slat. Make sure you smooth the cut edges of the slat, as they will be exposed to the eye.
Make enough pocket holes along the sides of the slats to create a rigid bond between the components. Select wood of high quality if you want to get a professional result.
The next step of the project is to attach the back wall to the picture ledge. Build the components out of 1×4 lumber and take accurate measurements before making the cuts. Fit the bottom component with the pocket holes downward-oriented and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the back component. add glue to the joint.
In order to get a get a professional result, we recommend you to fit a 1×2 trim to the front face of the picture ledge, as seen in the diagram. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues before attaching it to the shelves with 1 1/4″ screws.
Locate the studs in the wall, use a spirit level to make sure the shelves are horizontal and insert 2 1/2″ screws through the back component into the wooden studs.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden shelves in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
