This step by step diy woodworking project is about ladder tree stand plans. The project features detailed instructions for building a 18′ ladder tree stand. If you are looking for easy to follow instructions and diagram for building a deer tree stand, this is the project to follow. Make sure you take a look over the rest of plans to see alternatives and more projects for your garden.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a tree deer stand

Building the ladder

Building the ladder

The first step of the project is to build the actual ladder for the tree stand. Use 4×4 pressure treated lumber for the posts (220″ long) and 2×4 lumber for the steps. If you buy 20′ long beams and you want to build a permanent stand, you could set the posts into the ground for 20″. Otherwise, cut the beams to size. Drill pilot holes through the slats and secure them to the posts using 3″ decking screws.

Building the horizontal frames

Building the horizontal frames

Next, build the horizontal frames for the stand from 4×4 lumber. Cut the components at the right dimensions, using the information from the diagram. Align the edges with attention and make sure the corners are square. Use corner connectors to lock the components together.

Assembling the frame of the tree stand

Assembling the frame of the tree stand

Fit the horizontal frames to the ladder and to the tree, as shown in the plans. Use a spirit level to make sure the ladder is plumb and to check if the frames are horizontal. Use 6″ lag screws to lock the frames to the ladder and to the tree.

Building the braces

Fitting the braces

Fit the braces to the deer stand, as shown in the plans. Drill pilot holes and insert 5″ screws to lock the braces to the framing. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws.

Fitting the rail supports

Fitting the rail supports

Fit the vertical 2×4 supports to the frame of the deer stand, as shown in the plans. Use a spirit level to plumb the supports before locking them to the frame. Drill pilot holes before inserting the 3″ decking screws into the frame.

Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-200 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth. Apply a few coats of stain or paint to protect the stand from the elements.
