8×8 Lean to Greenhouse Plans

This step by step diy project is about 8×8 wood lean to greenhouse plans. This is a small greenhouse with a lean to roof, so you can build it next to the property line or even attach it to an already existing building. Make sure you check out the rest of my greenhouse plans HERE. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

How to build a Small Lean to Greenhouse

Assembling the base for the greenhouse

Assembling the base for the greenhouse

The first step of the project is to choose the location for the greenhouse. Remove the vegetation layer and then level the surface thoroughly. Use 4×4 lumber for the base beams. Make notches to both ends of the beams using a circular saw. Make parallel cuts inside the marked areas and then use a chisel to remove the excess.

Align the beams with attention, making sure the corners are square and then lock them together with 3 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Fitting the stakes

Fitting the stakes

Use 1×3 lumber for the stakes. Use a saw to make one end of the stakes V-shaped. Secure the stakes to the base beams with 2 1/2″ screws.

The next step of the wood project is to build the front wall for the greenhouse. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber at the right dimensions. Align the edges with attention and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs as shown in the diagram.

Build the side wall for the lean to greenhouse from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and then insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center, for a professional result. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.

The next step of the garden project is about framing the opposite wall for the greenhouse. Use the same techniques and add some supports for the vent windows. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the studs with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square.

Assembling the greenhouse frame

Assembling the greenhouse frame

Place the wall frames to the base of the greenhouse. Align the edges flush and plumb the wall frames with a spirit level. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the base skids. Moreover, you need to lock the adjacent wall together tightly with 3 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and check if the edges are flush.

Top-side-wall-frame

Use 2×4 lumber for the top side wall frame. Cut the components at the right dimensions, drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs equally spaced and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the top back wall

Fit the frame to the side of the greenhouse. Align the edges with attention and plumb it with a spirit level. Drill pilot holes through the top frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock it into place tightly.

I will be building this greenhouse in the spring. What do you recommend for the covering, (plastic). Also, what size, or amount do I need.
