10×12 Greenhouse Plans – Part II

This step by step diy project is about 10×12 greenhouse plans. This is PART 2 of the wooden greenhouse project, where I show you how to build the roof and how to fit the doors and the vents. You can make adjustments to my plans and fit more vents or change their locations (for ex. fit the vents between the rafters). Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

How to build a 10×12 greenhouse roof

Rafters-for-greenhouse

Rafters-for-greenhouse

Build the rafters for the greenhouse from 2×6 lumber. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts, as shown in the diagram. In addition, mark the cut lines to the opposite end and use a circular saw to make the cuts.

Fitting-the-rafters

Fitting-the-rafters

Fit the rafters to the top of the greenhouse, every 24″ on center. Use rafter hangers and 1 1/2″ screws to lock the rafters to the ridge beam. Use rafter ties and 1 1/2″ structural screws to lock the rafters at the opposite end of the roof.

Cover the roof with plastic film and stretch it so there are no folds.

Side-trims---greenhouse

Side-trims—greenhouse

Fit the 1×2 and 1×4 trims to the sides greenhouse, so you can stretch the film and lock it into place tightly. Use 1 5/8″ screws or 2″ nails to secure the trims along the framing of the greenhouse.

This is a sturdy greenhouse that offers an ideal mix of space and it is also cost friendly. You can adjust the slope of the greenhouse if you live in an area with heavy precipitations.
