Wood Center Console with Cupholders Plans

This step by step diy woodworking project is about a center console with cupholders plans. This is PART 2 of the porch swing project, where I show you how to build the wood center console with beverage cupholders. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a center console for a porch swing

Armrest

Armrest

First of all, you need to make the armrests for the porch swing. Therefore, mark the cut lines on the 1×2 slats and get the job done with a jigsaw for the notch and for the rounded end. Smooth the edges with sandpaper, or use a router.

Fitting the armrests

Fitting the armrests

Fit the 1×2 supports (11″ long) to the sides of the porch swing bench. Use a spirit level to plumb the supports, drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock them into place tightly. Fit the armrests to the top of the supports and center them into place. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws to secure them to the supports and to the backrest supports.

Next, you have to assemble the center console frame. Cut the components from 1×6 lumber at the right dimensions. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws, after making sure the corners are square. Align the edges flush and add glue to the joints.

Cupholder

Cupholder

Cut out the holes for the cupholders. You need to adjust the size of the holes according to the beverages you prefer. Use a jigsaw to make the holes or use a hole saw bit.

Assembling the center console

Assembling the center console

Fit the cupholder support to the top of the center console and lock it into place with 2″ nails and glue. Fit the 1×2 slats to the bottom of the console, so you can assemble the box. In this manner, you can hace storage space for your favorite snacks.

Fit the center console to the opening and then secure it to the backrest supports with carriage bolts. Alternatively, you can fit a hinge and secure the console to the bottom support.

Round over the edges with a router and then fill the holes with wood putty. Smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper and then apply a few coats of paint or stain, so you can enhance the look of the porch swing and to protect the wood from decay.

I’m looking for the plans for the structure you have pictures here. I already have a swing and am trying to get ideas on how to hang it. I believe this stand would work great. Do you offer these plans as well?
Thanks and great work.

I would go for hinges; it is the easiest way to get the job done. Hinges placed where the console swing.

How to you set the Center Console into the swing bench? Do you use simple hinges or a long doyel ?
And how do you get (adjust) the center console so that it will be leveled when opened ? Thanks… That will be my next Springtime project for the house 😉

You suggest to use simple hinges , but would a long doyel do a better job? And how do you get (adjust) the center console so that it will be leveled when opened ? Thanks… That will be my next Springtime project for the house 😉

If that doesn’t work well… How well can you copy drawings by hand?
