Making the frame of the box

Making the frame of the box

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the toy box. As you can easily see in the free plans, we recommend you to build the legs from 2×2 lumber. Moreover, build the bottom of the box using 1×4 lumber, using the information shown in the image.

After cutting the components at the right size, we recommend you to join the components together by using pocket screws. Drill the pilot holes, add glue and insert the 1 1/4″ into the legs.

It is essential to make sure the corners are right-angled before adding the wooden components into place. Therefore, use a carpentry square to make the adjustments. Moreover, check if the legs are perfectly plumb by using a spirit level.

Work with attention and with great care, when attaching the top frame into place. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 1×4 components before inserting the screws into the legs.

Building the floor of the toy box

There are a few manners in which you can build the floor of the toy box. Therefore, you can use 3/4″ plywood or 1×4 slats. Cut the material at the right size as to fit into place and lock it to the supports with finishing nails.

Attaching the slats to the exterior of the wall

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the slats to the sides of the structure. As you can easily notice in the plane, we recommend you to cut the 1×4 slats at the right size and to lock them to the cleats with 1 1/4″ screws or finishing nails.

Top Tip: If you use nails, we strongly suggest you to countersink their heads. Add waterproof glue between the slats if you want to enhance the bond of the exterior walls.

Fitting the caster wheels

Fitting the caster wheels

If you want to add a little twist to the project, you should consider adding small caster wheels to the four corners of the bottom frame. In this manner, you will be able to move the toy box a lot easier and efficiently.

Moreover, taking into account the durable structure of the wooden box, you can use it as a rustic bench. Therefore, it is essential to move it whenever and wherever you want.

Building the lid of the box

Building the lid of the box

One of the last steps of the project is to build the lid of the toy box and lock it into place. In order to build the lid, we recommend you to attach 1×4 slats on two cleats and to secure them with nails. Add decorative trims around the edges of the lid, in order to enhance the look of the box.

Fit the lid into place and lock it to the back support by using a piano hinge. Make sure you align the components at both ends, if you want to get a professional result.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden toy box in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
