This step by step diy project is about wood bench plans. If you want to enhance the look of your garden we recommend you to consider a simple wooden seat with a classic design. In this article, we show you how to build a simple bench in just a few hours, by using common materials and basic woodworking techniques. Always drill pilot holes through the components, in order to prevent the wood form splitting.
Building a wood bench is a complex project, so you should tackle all the aspects in a professional manner. First of all, we recommend you to choose the materials and the tools from the very beginning. Cedar, pine or redwood are excellent choices, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable. Round the exposed edges of the bench with a router or by using a sandblock. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a wood bench
The first step of the project is to build the seat of the bench. As you can see in the image, we recommend you to use 1×3 slats, cut at different sizes. Use a good circular saw when adjusting the slats at the right sizes, otherwise they won’t lock together properly.
Drill pilot holes through the components before inserting the galvanized screws. In addition, we recommend you to add waterproof glue and to clamp the components together for several hours.
In order to get a better idea about the steps involved in the project, we recommend you to pay attention to the image. Make sure you align the components at both ends before inserting the screws, otherwise the seat won’t have a nice appearance.
Building the supports for the bench is a complex process, but with adequate plans any person can get the job done. Therefore, you should use 2×4 lumber and cut the ends of the components as shown in the plans.
Top Tip: Smooth the cut edges of the components with 120-grit sandpaper before assembling the supports. Drill pilot holes through the exterior elements and insert the screws into the horizontal components. Add glue to enhance the bond.
Afterwards, we recommend you to place the seat on a level surface and attach the supports. As it is shown in the plans, we recommend you to align the supports, drill pilot holes, add waterproof glue and insert the screws into the seat slats.
Work with attention and let the glue to dry out before taking care of the finishing touches. Moreover install a stretcher between the supports, if you consider extra-support is needed.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components several coats of paint. Place the bench on a concrete slab, to protect the supports from excessive moisture.
