Building a wooden bench

Building the sides of the bench

Building the sides of the bench

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the wooden bench. Therefore, build the sides out of 2×4 lumber using the information from the diagram. Cut both ends of the legs at 80 degrees and attach them to the support.

Drill pocket holes through the top of the legs, align them with attention and secure them to the support with 2 1/2′ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure.

Fitting the bottom braces

Fitting the bottom braces

The next step of the project is to attach the 2×4 brace to the bottom of the A-frames. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the braces and secure them to the legs with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Make the angle cuts by using a circular saw after taking accurate cuts.

Fitting the stretcher

Fitting the stretcher

In order to add strength to the wooden bench, we recommend you to fit a stretcher between the sides of the structure.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretcher and secure it to the braces with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Plumb the sides with a spirit level before inserting the screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled.

Attaching the seat slats

Attaching the seat slats

Place several 2×6 slats on a level surface, making sure they are aligned and there are no gaps between them. Center the frame of the bench to the slats and drill several pilot holes through the supports.

Insert 2 1/2″ galvanized screws into the seat slats and add waterproof glue to the joints. Work with attention and clamp the seat slats together, as to make sure there are no gaps between them.

Fitting the trims

Fitting the trims

In order to add value to the bench, we recommend you to consider adding several 2×4 braces to the bench, as shown in the diagram. Cut both ends of the trims at 45 degrees and drill pocket holes at both ends before inserting the 2 1/2″ galvanized screws.

Place a spirit level on top of the seat slats to make sure they are perfectly horizontal. Smooth the exposed edges with sandpaper or by suing a nice router and a 3/4″ bit.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bar from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
