Assembling the frame of the bench

The first step of the project is to assemble the frame of the corner bench. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to use 2×2 lumber for the legs and 1×4 lumber for the aprons. Cut both ends of the front apron at 45 degrees. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the aprons and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Plumb the legs with a spirit level before inserting the screws and make sure the seat frame is perfectly horizontal.

In order to add support to the corners bench, we recommend you to fit a 2×4 middle support. Cut both sides of the tip at 45 degrees. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the support and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Align the edges with great care leave no gaps between the components.

Build the seat of the corner bench using 3/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheet and make the notches using a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Fit the plywood seat to the frame and secure it into place using 1 1/4″ finishing nails and glue. Align the edges with attention and leave no gaps between the components.

Building the backrest for the corner bench is a straight forward process. First of all, you need to secure the supports to the legs, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 2×4 supports and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled.

Build the backrest balusters out of 2×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the slats and get the job done by using a circular saw. Drill pocket holes through the balusters, as described in the diagram.

Fit the balusters to the backrest supports, making sure they are placed equally-spaced. Use 2 1/2″ screws to lock the balusters to the horizontal supports. Add glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the outdoor corner bench from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.
