This step by step diy project is about garage roof plans. This article is the second part of a larger project about how to build a detached garage for a single car. Adjust the design and the dimensions of the garage to suit your needs and budget. Plan everything from the very beginning and build a strong foundation for the garage, in order to build a durable garage.

It is essential to choose the right materials before starting the construction and the assembly of the garage. As you will see in the project, you need to choose durable lumber with a nice appearance, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Make sure the components are in a good visual condition and choose professional tools when adjusting their size. Take accurate measurements and join the components with glue and screws. Building a garage roof

Building the bottom rafters

Building the bottom rafters

The first step of the outdoor project is to build the bottom rafters for your detached garage. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build he components out of 2×4 lumber. The bottom rafters that will be placed at the ends of the roof will have both ends cut at 30 degrees.

Take accurate measurements and make sure the lumber is perfectly straight and in a good visual condition.

The next step of the project is to lay the bottom rafters to the top plates, as described in the diagram. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to place the rafters equally-spaced. Align the rafters at both ends and secure them to the plates by using galvanized screws.

Work with attention and check out the instructions described in the diagram, otherwise the you won’t be able to fit the roofing sheets to the rafters in a professional manner.

Fitting the top ridge

Fitting the top ridge

Next, you have to fit the 2×6 top ridge into place. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to fit 2×4 supports to both ends of the roof. Drill pocket holes at both ends and secure them to the structure using 2 1/2″ screws. Use a spirit level to plumb the supports and to level the top ridge.

Cut both ends of the 2×4 beams at 60 degrees, as shown in the diagram. If you are going to use 8′ long 2x4s the rafters will be a little smaller but they will provide enough overhang to protect the carport from rain.

Attaching the rafters

Attaching the rafters

Fit the rafters to the top of the garage, as shown in the plans. Place the rafters equally-spaced and drill pilot holes before securing them to the top ridge with screws. Make sure you use appropriate hardware to connect the rafters to the top plates. It is essential for the rigidity of the whole frame. Placing the rafters 24″ on center will create a heavy duty structure.

Building the overhangs

Building the overhangs

Continue the project by assembling the overhangs for the carport. As you can notice in the diagram, you need to build longer rafters and to secure them together with blockings. You can adjust the width of the overhangs to suit your needs. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the blockings. Place the blocking equally-spaced.

Fitting the end panels

Fitting the end panels

Fit the 1/2″ plywood sheets to cover the gable ends of the garage. Align the edges with attention and secure them into place using finishing 1 5/6″ nails or screws.

Fitting the overhangs

Attach the overhangs to the gable ends of the detached garage. Align the edges with attention and secure the overhangs to the framing with 3″ screws.

Attaching the plywood sheets

Attaching the plywood sheets

Attach 3/4″ plywood sheets to the rafters, as shown in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the sheets and make sure you invest in tongue and groove sheets for proper connection between the panels. Alternatively, you can attach the plywood sheets horizontally. Use 1 5/8″ screws to secure the sheets to the rafters, every 8″.

Installing the roofing

Installing the roofing

Cover the roof of the shed with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a 12″ piece for the top ridge. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Before installing the siding, cover the plywood walls with housewrap. In this manner, you will protect the garage from air and moisture. Cut the wrap around the door and window openings and staple it to the frame. Attach siding to the exterior walls. choose the product that suit your needs and fits your budget.

Top Tip: Fit the windows, the side door and the garage door to the frame before installing the 1×4 trims. You can also install 1/4″ soffit to enhance the look of the garage.
